It sounds like the story of a Hollywood blockbuster — a 24-year-old Dutchman plans to «get in» the ocean and devises a possibility that is almost unimaginable to many.
Even if it may sound unimaginable, the young Dutchman has realized his project «The Ocean Cleanup», which will start its first rehearsal on Saturday (08.09.2018) in San Francisco (USA).
The «The Ocean Cleanup» project aims to filter plastic particles from the oceans of our world, freeing the oceans of plastic waste. This gigantic project is supposed to work by extending tube-like barriers of up to 2 km in length to the sea, positioning them there with an anchor and stopping the plastic parts by means of retaining barriers underneath. The plastic waste is thus held on these walls and fish can easily pass through these barriers without being held. The garbage accumulated there is subsequently removed from transport ships at regular intervals.
The pilot project targets the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in the Pacific Ocean, which is a collection of plastic waste four times the size of Germany.
At the start, a 600-meter-long version of this gigantic plastic waste disposal plant is used.
We are looking forward to this great project that is important for all of us, because although many people rarely get in direct contact with the sea, the sea is one of the main reasons why we can live our lives the way we do today That’s why this project affects us all.
